Pesa Bydgoszcz has won the first tender for the supply of 20 EMU Inter-Regio electric trains for Romanian Railways. The Bydgoszcz factory also presented the most favourable offer in the carrier’s second tender for the delivery of 62 EMU Regio vehicles in three tranches, according to the factory’s director of strategic projects and communications, Maciej Grześkowiak.
Pesa has competed in Romania in two tenders. The first is for the purchase of 20 EMU Inter-Regio vehicles with 15 years of maintenance with options for an additional nine units and another 15 years of maintenance. The second order is for the delivery in three tranches of 62 EMU Regio vehicles with 15 years of maintenance and an option for a further 15 years of maintenance.
Pesa, Siemens and Alstom were interested in the tender, with Pesa and Alstom ultimately submitting bids. The value of the first order won by Pesa is more than PLN 1 billion, and together with the second tender, in which the factory is awaiting official confirmation of victory, it is almost PLN 4 billion.
“In both proceedings, Pesa’s offer proved to be the best, and on Thursday the Tender Committee officially announced the outcome of the proceedings for the supply of Inter-Regio vehicles”, said Grześkowiak.
The vehicles offered by Pesa are three-member electric multiple units, developing speeds of up to 160 km/h, with 192 seats in 1st and 2nd class, which will be powered by AC 25 kV traction network and equipped with the Romanian PZB 90 safety system.
The signing of the contracts in both proceedings is expected to take place later this year and the first vehicles should be delivered to Romania in two years’ time. To date, Pesa has delivered trams to the Romania between 2012 and 2023. A total of 37 of them are already in service, in Cluj, Iasi and Craiova.
Pesa is currently producing trams for Tallinn and vehicles for CD and Regio Jet in the Czech Republic and railways in Ghana. In recent years, exports have accounted for more than half of the company’s production.
