“Independence and sovereignty cannot be confused with a naïve desire for isolation from the European Union and disconnection from neighbours”, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wrote in a text published on i.pl and in the dailies of the Polska Press publishing house.
The head of the Polish government stressed that in life and in politics he tries to be guided by three principles: responsibility, courage, and readiness to compromise.
Responsibility for the fate of Poland for our independence and sovereignty, for economic development, for the standard of living of all citizens.
Courage – to continually defend the Polish interest against external and internal threats, against pressure to give up the values we hold dear, against attacks on our national and cultural identity.
Readiness to compromise – if it can secure Poland’s interest, allow it to defend itself against external and internal threats, provide for Polish economic security – compromise in the spirit of this very courage and responsibility.
In the text, the head of government recalled the readers that one must be aware that if Russia wins in Ukraine, Poland is the next target.
“We also need to be aware that defending independence may require our people to fight a real battle. May we not have to fight it. But we must be ready for it. Finally, we must be aware that this defense can only be effective if, on the one hand, we are supported by strong allies and, on the other hand, if we have sufficient own resources to build a strong army”, he noted.
In this context, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of the Polish presence in NATO and the European Union.
“Independence and sovereignty must not be confused with autarky, with a naïve desire to isolate ourselves from the EU and cut ourselves off from our neighbours. It is possible – and sometimes even necessary – to argue with them. But one must also be able to make compromises”, said Morawiecki.
Mateusz Morawiecki convinces that money from the EU budget and the Reconstruction Fund does not weaken Polish sovereignty. On the contrary: they strengthen our state and accelerate economic development.
