The European Commission has granted the Polish company Gaz-System around EUR 19.6 million in support for the floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project in the Gdansk area. The funding was granted under the Connecting Europe Facility.
“The European Commission’s decision to grant Gaz-System financial assistance for the LNG Gdansk project for the activity: ‘Pre-investment works to obtain the construction permit for the offshore part of PCI 6.27 LNG Gdansk (PL)’ was accepted by the EU Member States on 7 December 2022. The formal adoption of the decision will take place in the coming weeks. The funding was awarded as part of the CEF Energy grant competition launched in May 2022.
The funding includes seabed surveys, environmental inventories, FEED (Front End Engineering Design), construction and detailed design, and obtaining the necessary administrative decisions and permits – including planning permission.
The implementation of the floating terminal project is part of the Polish and European policy to ensure safe access to gas fuel. It is an element of a number of strategies and policies in the area of ensuring security of gas supply, as well as a response to the ever-growing demand for gaseous fuel in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe and is also part of the process of the country’s energy and economic transition to less carbon-intensive energy sources.
In May, the president of Gaz-System announced that the company was in talks with the government about accelerating the investment in the construction of the FSRU terminal in the Gdansk area. The idea is for it to be completed in 2025 or earlier. He also indicated that the capacity of the unit could be increased.
Gas Transmission Operator Gaz-System is a strategic company for the Polish economy, responsible for the transmission of natural gas and the management of the most important gas pipelines in Poland.
