Poland has selected an American offer to build a nuclear power plant. It will be built using WECNuclear (Westinghouse Nuclear) technology. The selection of the US contractor was announced on Twitter by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
“A strong alliance provides guarantees for the success of our joint initiatives. After recent fruitful discussions with K. Harris and J. Granholm we confirm the implementation of the nuclear project with the proven and safe WECNuclear technology. We thank the US Embassy in Poland for its cooperation. Resolution of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday”, the Prime Minister wrote.
The US offer to build a nuclear power plant, cooperation within the International Atomic Energy Agency and energy security measures were the main topics of a meeting between Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskwa and Minister of State Assets Jacek Sasin and US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.
The Polish government’s decision was commented on by the US ambassador to Poland, Mark Brzezinski.
“Fantastic news from Prime Minister Morawiecki: as a result of his engagement with Vice President Harris, Poland has selected the U.S. government and Westinghouse as its nuclear energy partner and will formally complete the process next week!”, he wrote on Twitter.
The head of the US Department of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, emphasised in Twitter that this is a huge step in strengthening the relationship with Poland to ensure energy security for future generations.
“We look forward to continuing this collaboration to accelerate the transition to clean energy with our partners in Europe. This announcement also sends a clear message to Russia: we will no longer allow them to use energy as a weapon. The West will stand together against this unprovoked aggression, while diversifying energy supply chains and strengthening climate cooperation”, she wrote.
