The two-day visit of the President of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic and his wife to Poland began on Thursday 27 October. The main topics of discussion include the international situation, with the war in Ukraine, military and energy security, and support for Montenegro’s EU aspirations.
During the meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda, the two leaders exchanged experiences and opinions on the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Balkans.
According to President Duda after the talks, he agreed with the President of Montenegro that continued military support for Ukraine is crucial for the country to regain control of its borders. Andrzej Duda stressed that this is fundamental to the restoration of order and the primacy of international law.
“The free world, the democratic world, our states, as states of the Euro-Atlantic community, should absolutely support Ukraine in this regard”, the Polish President stated.
Andrzej Duda also assured that Poland supports Montenegro’s aspirations to join the European Union. He announced that he would be proposing to the allies within the Three Seas Initiative to grant Montenegro the status of a cooperating state with the Initiative in the near future. Such status was first granted to Ukraine in June this year at the Initiative’s Riga Summit.
The issues related to Montenegro’s integration into the European Union were also the main topic of President Djukanovic’s conversation with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
According to government spokesman Piotr Müller, the Western Balkan countries are supported by Poland on their way to European Union membership. „Our country is sharing its pre-accession experience to assist Montenegro in its preparations to join the Community. We are helping with economic development and reforms in the Western Balkans region”, he said.
