The winner of the 16th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition was Hina Maeda from Japan, 2nd place was won by Meruert Karmenova from Kazakhstan, and 3rd place belonged to Qingzhu Weng from China. Three equivalent distinctions were awarded to: Hana Chang (Japan/Singapore/USA), Jane Hyeonjin Cho (South Korea), Dayoon You (South Korea).
“It is very important for both Polish and world culture that events such as the Wieniawski Competition are gaining a wider audience with each successive round, and that they are so popular around the world. In today’s difficult times, it is worth having such a refuge, as culture is a beautiful enclave that gives strength to live”, said Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Professor Piotr Gliński during a meeting with participants and jurors of the 16th Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition.
The competition was held from 7 to 21 October 2022, in three stages, open to the public. This year’s event attracted record interest. As many as 224 violinists from 34 countries entered the competition.
By decision of the Pre-selection Jury, 41 violinists qualified for the Competition, of whom 34 qualified for the auditions, including seven from Poland, six from Japan, four from China, four from South Korea, three from Germany and representatives of the United States, Austria, the Netherlands, France, Kazakhstan and Switzerland. In accordance with the rules of procedure, 15 people qualified for the second, and 6 for the third stage.
Winners of the 16th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition will go on a concert tour consisting of 30 concerts in Poland and 30 abroad. The winner of the Competition will perform with orchestras in Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. He will also visit countries in Asia, the Americas and Africa.
