PKN Orlen to invest in gas, nuclear and alternative fuels

by Dignity News
Orlen is investing in gas, nuclear and alternative fuels. By 2030, it is aiming for 4.5GW from low- and zero-carbon sources. The company is also preparing for a fuel transition – it wishes to obtain 4.5 GW of energy from low and zero carbon sources by 2030. PKN Orlen CEO Daniel Obajtek said that in the first quarter of this year, the Orlen Group had energy assets of 3.4 GW, including 649 MW of energy from renewable energy sources (RES).

“We will spend PLN 47 billion on zero and low-carbon energy by 2030. We are already focusing on the intensive development of our assets, with a capital expenditure of over PLN 15 billion this year alone. From the beginning I have said that I am not signing letters of intent but implementing important projects”, said Daniel Obajtek.

Orlen already has 10 onshore farms with a capacity of 353 MW, the Group is preparing – as the first Polish company – to launch an investment in the Baltic Sea with a capacity of up to 1,200 MW and is applying for further concessions.

– There are currently 11 concessions to be acquired, with a total capacity of 10.5 GW. Of course, we would like to acquire as many of these concessions as possible, but this is already a matter of competition and we are waiting for the concession procedure to be decided. I believe that it may take place soon,” assessed the CEO of PKN Orlen.

According to Daniel Obajtek, zero-emission energy cannot function without the support of low-emission energy, i.e. gas energy. Orlen already has two power plants in steam-gas technology in Włocławek and Płock. The company is studying another project in Gdansk, and is also working on SMR and MMR micro and small nuclear reactor projects. According to Orlen’s CEO, the first SMR could be constructed before 2030.

The company is investing in the development of alternative fuels. A hydrogen hub is already in operation at Orlen Południe in Trzebinia and a second one is being built in Włocławek. Orlen is also investing in charging infrastructure; of the 100 hydrogen stations to be operational by 2030, 57 will be built in Poland, 28 in Slovakia and 26 in the Czech Republic.
