Video games in the core curriculum to be the next stage of modernising Polish schools

by Dignity News
The Ministry of Education and Science (MEiN) has announced the inclusion of the first two video games in the core curriculum and the announcement of a competition for a further 30 game titles to be used in the teaching process. “The introduction of computer games will enrich the teaching process making it more attractive”, said Minister of Education and Science Przemysław Czarnek

“Recent years have brought massive investments in computerisation, computer equipment, connecting all schools to high-speed Internet, subsidising the purchase of computer equipment during the pandemic period, and financial support under the ‘Laboratories of the Future’ programme. We are entering a new phase of modernising education, not only in terms of hardware but also in terms of the core curriculum. That is why we are recommending the inclusion of video games in the educational process”, said the head of the Ministry of Education.

The video game ‘This War of Mine’ is the work of 11bit studios, which confronts the player with the realities of civil wars and then proposes to deepen the reflection with the perspective of the victims – defenceless civilians, including children. Thanks to the game, students are able to benefit from an attractive way of conveying knowledge and expanding the limits of their imagination. The game has received numerous awards and has been discussed in pedagogical and social contexts.

“The Cipher Game” is a gaming project, developed as an FPP (first-person perspective) game. It consists of three missions. It describes the course of the 1920 Polish-Bolshevik war and the influence of Polish cryptology on its victorious finale. Each player can break Bolshevik cyphers, destroy a Soviet armoured train and save Europe from communist enslavement.

The solutions used in the game were created on the basis of source materials or were reproduced from historical exhibits and the players’ missions are documentation of historical events”, informs the Ministry of Education and Science.
