May was another month with record results at Chopin Airport. Last month, the airport handled over 1.2 million passengers and almost 13,300 air operations were recorded. This confirms that air traffic is rapidly returning to the pre-pandemic level.
May was the first month in 2022 in which the number of passengers exceeded one million. It is 32% more, compared to April. The result from May 2022 is 76% of passengers in May 2019, the last one before the pandemic. The record day was May 29; the capital airport then handled almost 50,000 people. This result is only 5,200 people lower than the result of May 29, 2019.
The stable growth in air traffic is confirmed by the data from the first months of the year. From January to the end of May, 4.22 million people used the services of Chopin Airport. In the first five months of this year, cargo transport also increased by 12% compared to the period from January to May 2019, which amounted to almost 41.5 thousand tones.
“Air traffic is returning much faster than forecasted by the airline and airport organizations, i.e. IATA and ACI. Already this summer, at its peak, we will be reaching the results from before the pandemic. And next year, I am sure that we will beat this result, which is proved by the trends not only in Warsaw but also throughout Poland”, says Stanisław Wojtera, the president of the “Polish Airports” State Enterprise, manager of Chopin Airport.
In May, LOT Polish Airlines was the most popular carrier at the Warsaw airport, ahead of Wizz Air and Lufthansa. The most popular regular destinations were London, Paris and Amsterdam. Enter Air was the most popular charter carrier at Chopin Airport. The top three also include Smartwings and LOT Polish Airlines. The most popular charter destinations were Turkey’s Antalya and Egypt’s Marsa Alam and Hurghada.
