POLIN Museum is inviting participants to join the jubilee social and educational action Daffodils. The theme of the initiative is love, and the program of events both on-line and off-line is focused on it. April 19 is the 79th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. On this day, all over Poland, people can be joined by memory and its symbol – a daffodil which has reminded the uprising for ten years.
The museum also emphasizes the importance of timeless and universal attitudes that have much in common with love: sensitivity to the harm of others and dedication to the people in need.
“Action Daffodils is a tribute to the fighters and civilians who faced their tormentors in the occupied city 79 years ago, with no hope for military success. This year’s event takes place at a time when another bloody conflict has flared up abroad. It is therefore natural that we will also manifest love in the dimension of timeless opposition to war, we are against aggression, and we are on the side of the victims. We must remember and we cannot be indifferent to evil”, says Zygmunt Stępiński, director of the POLIN Museum.
The program of Daffodil social and educational action focuses on the theme of love – also sisterly and brotherly love, romantic or parental love. The ambassadors of this year’s action are Irena Santor, Krzysztof Gonciarz, Eliza Rycembel, Janusz Gajos, Andrzej Piaseczny and Aleksandra Popławska.
The daffodil has become a symbol of respect and memory of the uprising thanks to Marek Edelman. A survivor of the ghetto, the last commander of the Jewish Combat Organization was placing a bouquet of those yellow flowers at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw’s Muranów on each anniversary of the Uprising. The action organized by the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews is aimed at disseminating this symbol and spreading knowledge about the uprising itself.
